With all the various types of Metroids, I think this could allow for a lot of interesting gameplay ideas. In a sense, she would become a Mother Brain of sorts. One Idea I have is for her to communicate telepathically with Metroids, and even being able to command them. I also really think they should explore the concept of Samus becoming more Metroid like, and giving her new weapons and abilities. As far as I know, there aren't any Metroidvania games that have attempted that kind of "on rails" approach, and it would do a lot for world building and exploration as opposed to classic sidescrolling. However, Team Ninja insisted on a fully 3D game, and I think it meshed poorly with Sakamoto's insistence on the single wiimote controller with the D-pad for movement. One of Sakamoto's ideas for Other M was to make it "on rails" in the sense that movement is restricted to a 2D plane, but the camera shifts and moves through 3D perspectives (a la Pandemonium!/Klona). Obviously they were constrained by the source material there. Samus Returns was good, but far too safe. I'd rather Sakamoto learn from his mistakes and push on forward with the series rather than reverting to the tried and true. And of course, the GOAT Metroid side character, Anthony Higgs (I'll always remember you.) Expanding the Metroid universe in general. Putting a larger emphasis on Narrative (though obviously this was done poorly). A dynamic camera that blended 2D and 3D elements and gave many unique perspectives. A fast and agile Samus moving in a 3D space. For all it's faults, I do think Metroid: Other M had some great ideas. In some ways, games like Hollow Knight, Guacamelee!, and Ori have upped the ante for 2D sidescrolling Metroidvania design. While I would still be excited beyond belief for that, I hope Sakamoto will be a little more ambitious. I feel like when most people talk about Metroid 5 they are envisioning a classic 2D sidescrolling Metroid game.
